after the Oktoberfest

The oldest and most traditionally known Oktoberfest tent was built and found by the carpenter Michael Schottenhamel (1838 till 1912). As he was just, freshly married in 1867 with the daughter of a host, he moved from his tavern called "Drei Mohren" in the Luitpoldstreet to a little barn behind the "Königszelt", in which only 50 people had space. Up until today in the fifth generation this area on the Oktoberfestground and the host tradition has been kept up by the Schottenhamel family.

In summer 1872, an amazing happening occured: The specially stored Oktoberfest and summer beer was unexpectedly used up too soon. Due to this, Michael Schottenhamel the 1st introduced a newly brewed beer to the Oktoberfest. This special beer had been brewed already in March by the Franziskaner-Leist brewery and was called the "Märzen". This special process of brewing was known as the Vienna style:
Due to its 16% more main flowering, the beer had a very, however for that time unusual, light colour, was substantially stronger and became more expensive. Never the less it did become the classic and original October-Festival-Beer.
After Michael Schottenhamel started a small tent with only 300 seats in 1887, he then, as the first Oktoberfest host, built a more modern tent, in 1896, that already had the capacity of 1500 places. The record was then broken by the idea of Michael Schottenhamel, to build a much larger and more modern tent that could carry the capacity of 8000 seats. His Idea was then carried out by the carpenter Gabriel Seidel in 1908.

Even students started having their lectures in the "Schottenhamel" tent during the Oktoberfest. It was soon a place to be and therefore had given the name, "Nr one house at the place".
Even the better gentlemen, officers, noblemen and artists made this tent to an exclusive and special meeting spot. In 1912 Michael the second took over the tradition of his father. (1876 - 1968) Even in the difficult times of the world economical crisis he did not give up this tradition. Only through his personal guarantees the Oktoberfest could continue to exist in 1932.
In 1949 it was the first year, were the Oktoberfest could take place again after the terror years of the war. Due to the legendary first words "O'zapft is!" (the first bavarian words after hitting the keg) of Munich's mayor Thomas Wimmer in 1950 the Schottenhamel-tent was claimed to be the official tent, to allow the beginning of the Oktoberfest. This tradition remained until today. In 1968 the sons of Michael the second took over the Schottenhamel-dynasty: Max (1906 - 1983) and Hans (1913 - 1993). In 1987 Peter Schottenhamel born in (1941) and his cousin Christian Schottenhamel born in (1962) continued the tradition of the Schottenhamel family. The fifth generation, Michael P. (1965) and Thomas K. (1968) are as well helping in the oldest Oktoberfest-tent.
